Sarantos Kargakos was born in Gytheio, Laconia. He studied philology at the University of Athens and collaborated with several major tutorial schools in Athens. He also served as a member of the teaching staff of the Hellenic Navy War College, the National Defence School, and the Joint War College in Thessaloniki. He was one of the leading figures of the student movement during the period 1961–63 and the proposer of allocating 15% of the national budget to Education. He authored a series of books on historical and linguistic subjects, as well as numerous articles in various journals. He passed away on Monday, 14 January 2019, from cancer. He was buried two days later at the Second Cemetery of Athens.
